"In 2005, one senses that the original spirit of adventure is very much alive, but tempered with intelligent management of economic growth and the natural environment. This is coupled to an extraordinary tourism industry embracing 1.8 million domestic and international visitor nights per year, generating $315 million in Port Douglas alone. In addition, agricultural activity produces a million tonnes of sugar cane valued at $30 million to the Shire economy, as well as cattle and crop production.
What attracts so many people to the region? Surely it’s not just the landscape and the ocean. I believe there are other factors, and I include here the community’s management of its natural resources.
In conclusion, it seems to me that your shire community has created a model for others to emulate – in sustainability, infrastructure, industry, and lifestyle. I know that this hasn’t happened by accident. It is the result of people having a vision, working through difficulties, and ultimately finding solutions that have established a distinct regional identity."
His Excellency, Major General Michael Jeffery, AC CVO MC (Retd), Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia. (visit to Douglas Shire, 11th July, 2005):
