FODS ORGANISE DEMONSTRATION AND RALLY




The FODS organised a massive street demonstration and rally at ANZAC on Sunday, 5th August 2007 to protest the forced amalgamation of the Douglas Shire into a larger Cairns Regional Council. Almost 2000 people from all corners of the Shire marched from Reynolds Park to ANZAC Park where a roster of 12 speakers representing the various industry, cultural and social groups and geographic areas of the Shire. The speakers urged the community to put the Premier on notice that the community would not accept Amalgamation!

FODS PRESENT SUBMISSION TO SENATE INQUIRY Monday, 3 September

The FODS made a written submission and spoke at the Senate Inquiry in support of Federal legislation to conduct a federally funded referendum on Amalgamation in the Douglas shire.

SPOKESMAN FOR FODS JOINS FONS IN BRISBANE TO DECLARE WAR ON BEATTIE GOVERNMENT, Tuesday 4 September

A spokesperson from FODS travelled to Brisbane to join the executive committee of the FONS to put the Beattie government on notice that both groups were committed to fighting forced amalgamation for "as long as it takes." At a Press Conference on the steps of the Parliament, the FODS warned that amalgamation would be an issue in the upcoming Federal election and in the next State election.

FODS ORGANISED A DEMONSTRATION AT THE DSC CHAMBERS, Tuesday, 18

The FODS mobilised nearly 50 residents to attend the DSC meeting in support of CR Rod Davis's motion to rescind the malevolent motion by Bill Bellero to distance the Douglas Shire Council from, and prevent the staff from participating in, the formulation of "Iconic Legislation." 

FODS MEET WITH PREMIER ANNA BLIGH, Tuesday,25 September

Two spokespersons from the FODS met privately with the Premier to urge her to exclude the Douglas Shire from the Amalgamation process. The exchange was cordial but very frank. She gave no indication she was prepared to entertain our proposals but did agree to keep an open mind as she reviewed the submissions presented.
