A BIG THANKYOU TO THE DOUGLAS SHIRE COMMUNITY - HERE'S TO A PROSPEROUS FUTURE IN DOUGLAS

The steering committee of the Friends of Douglas Shire (FODS) wishes to sincerely thank everyone in the community who has fought to reclaim our voice and local democracy.  Special thanks go to all those who were able to volunteer their time at information stalls, pre-polling booths and on polling day.  Saturday's result could not have been achieved without the community's continuous support and in particular the generous financial and in-kind support received from so many of you.  You are too numerous to mention individually but we sincerely thank each and every one of you.

Now that the majority have chosen to move forward under the governance of a new Douglas Shire, we hope that everyone comes together to work for the betterment of our entire community with respect and goodwill.

Yours sincerely,

Robert Hanan, Michael Gabour, David Carey, Roisin Allen, Gail Shaw, Mike Berwick, Byron Kurth, Alan Carle and Julia Leu.

FUNDING THE COSTS OF DE-AMALGAMATION

The FODS budget model provides for borrowing the costs of de-amalgamation to mitigate the impact on rates to individual properties so that there will be no $701 increase in rates as predicted by the QTC. The Minister for Local Government has indicated however that de-amalgamating Council's will not be allowed to borrow the costs of de-amalgamation. By clicking on the document opposite find out why this indication by the Minister is no problem at all for the very robust FODS budget model and consequently a new Douglas Shire.

CRC HAS MASSIVE FINANCIAL PROBLEM LOOMING

The CRC's infrastructure assets are degraded by more than 30% and this situation is getting worse. What is more these circumstances have been applied by the QTC to its financial assessment of a new Douglas Shire ignoring the fact that at the time of amalgamation the Douglas Shire's infrastructure assets were degraded by only 17%. This means that the QTC assessment has almost doubled the cost of depreciation to the new Douglas Shire adding $4 million a year to the cost of annual depreciation than is actually necessary. Further evidence the QTC assessment is fundamentally flawed. See the FODS evidence which proves this assertion opposite.

QTC SHORT CHANGES DOUGLAS BY $4 MILLION A YEAR

The QTC has short changed the new Douglas Shire by $4 miilion in recurrent revenue every year. No wonder the QTC financial assessment of a new Council concludes it is not financially viable.

See the FODS assessment opposite to find out why the QTC assessment is fundamentally flawed in its assessment of the new Douglas Shire's revenue raising ability

De-amalgamation Submission

FODS has submitted our proposal for the creation of a New Douglas Shire to
the Minister for Local Government, the Hon David Crisafulli. It was presented along with the required petition from the electors of the old Douglas Shire and FODS is grateful to all those who assisted in collecting and checking the signatures. We got well over the required number. .

The Minister will evaluate our plan and decide whether or not to refer the matter to the Boundaries Commissioner for a full review. We anticipate this will happen within the next few days.
If we are successful the Commissioner will then have until the 28th of November to complete his recommendations.
